In what position should you avoid transporting an intoxicated patient?

Transporting an intoxicated patient in the prone position is not advisable due to several significant safety concerns. When a patient is placed face down, there is a risk of airway obstruction, particularly if they become unresponsive or if vomiting occurs. In this position, the patient's airway may become compromised because they cannot clear their throat or maintain a patent airway effectively.

Additionally, monitoring the patient's level of consciousness and vital signs becomes much more difficult in the prone position, which is critical in managing intoxication. In the event of respiratory depression common with alcohol intoxication or other substance use, placing the patient prone could lead to serious complications, including suffocation.

In contrast, positions like lateral recumbent or Fowler's allow for better airway management and monitoring of the patient's condition. Keeping an intoxicated patient in a safer position can significantly enhance their chances of a positive outcome during transport.
